Efficacy Analysis of Rigid Esophagoscopy Combined with Flexible Bronchoscopy in Therapy of Intractable Esophageal Foreign Bodies

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the clinical value of the hybridization of rigid esophagoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy on intractable esophageal foreign bodies (FBs). Methods Data of 11 patients who received hybridization of rigid esophagoscopy and ?exible bronchoscopy on their intractable esophageal FBs from June 2014 to January 2020 in our hospital and they were retrospectively analyzed. Results The FBs was 2.5 to 21 cm down from the entrance of esophagus, including Cervical segment (2 cases), Upper thoracic segment (4 cases), mid-thoracic segment (4 cases) and lower thoracic segment (1 case). The length of mistakenly swallowed FBs were 25 to 40 mm while the length of esophagus stents were 85 to 170mm. The operation time was 8 to 100 minutes. Except of a case of beef FB, all cases had injuries of esophagus in different degrees. All the 11 cases of esophageal FBs were removed successfully. There were 3 cases of complications which are Esophageal abscess, Mediastinal abscess and Tracheo-esophageal fistula (one case each) and all of them existed preoperatively. Conclusion Esophageal FBs which unable to be removed with gastroscopy could be removed with hybridization of rigid esophagoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy and the hybridization of rigid esophagoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy is a feasible method for intractable esophageal foreign bodies.
