Therapeutic effect of modified Shiwei Powder on incarcerated upper ureteral calculi after ultrasound-guided extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy

Abstract:
Objective To analyze the therapeutic effect of modified Shiwei Powder on patients with incarcerated upper ureteral calculi after ultrasound-guided extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Methods 112 patients with incarcerated upper ureteral calculi of damp-heat accumulation syndrome who underwent ultrasound-guided ESWL in Suzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from May 2021 to October 2024 were enrolled in this study. They were assigned to the control group (n=56) and the traditional Chinese medicine group (n=56) according to the random number table method. The control group was given conventional postoperative treatment, while the traditional Chinese medicine group was treated with modified Shiwei Powder on the basis. Both groups were treated for 14 d. The stone clearance rate, white blood cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Scr) levels were compared between the two groups. The incidence of adverse reactions and traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores were statistically analyzed. Results The stone clearance rate in the traditional Chinese medicine group reached 94.64%, higher than that in the control group 82.14% (P <0.05). After 14 d of treatment, both groups showed reductions in WBC, CRP, PCT, BUN and Scr levels. These indexes in the traditional Chinese medicine group were lower compared with the control group (P <0.05). The total incidence of complications in the traditional Chinese medicine group was 3.57%, much lower than that in the control group 14.29% (P <0.05). Conclusion Applying modified Shiwei Powder to treat patients with incarcerated upper ureteral calculi after ultrasound-guided ESWL can significantly lower the levels of inflammatory indicators, improve renal function, and reduce the risk of complications.
