Clinical effect of gold needle reduction combined with external fixation of metacarpal splint in the treatment of oblique fracture of metacarpal shaft

Abstract:
Objective To analyze the effectiveness and patient satisfaction of gold needle reduction combined with metacarpal splint external fixation in the treatment of oblique fracture of metacarpal shaft. Methods A retrospective analysis of 22 patients with oblique fractures of the metacarpal shaft who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria from January 2021 to January 2024 in Rock White House Hospital. The demographic data, preoperative and postoperative fracture angle, fracture healing time, VAS scores, hand function TAM scores and patients’ satisfaction were analyzed. Results Among the metacarpal shaft fractures, there were more males than females(18∶4), and more right hands than left hands(19∶3). The angle of fracture was restored from 33.1°±6.4° to 5.8°±2.1°. The fracture healing time was 6-10 weeks. The VAS score of the patient's hand gradually decreased with treatment. Hand stiffness occurred in 1 patient during treatment. After 6 months of treatment, the TAM score of hand function was excellent in 20 patients and good in 2 patients. At the last follow-up, 1 patient was not satisfied with the patient satisfaction survey, 1 was satisfied, and 20 were very satisfied. ConclusionGold needle reduction combined with metacarpal splint fixation is an effective treatment for oblique fracture of metacarpal shaft. It has the advantages of more minimal invasion, less complications and higher satisfaction.
