"Eggshell" technology optimized percutaneous kyphoplasty combined with hyperextension reduction in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures

Abstract:
Objective To analyze the efficacy of "eggshell" technology optimized percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) combined with hyperextension reduction in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF). Methods In this prospective cohort study, 80 patients with OVCF admitted to our hospital from September 2020 to March 2022 were randomly divided into two groups of 40 cases each, the control group treated with PKP optimised by the "eggshell" technique, and the observation group treated with the over-extension repositioning method (on the basis of the control group) before the operation. The two groups were compared in terms of surgical indicators, pain level , dysfunction level, spinal structural indicators, and complications. Results The number of fluoroscopic images and the amount of bone cement used in the observation group were significantly increased (P<0.05), and the activity time of getting out of bed was significantly reduced (P<0.05). The visual analogue pain scale (VAS) and Oswestry dysfunction index questionnaire (ODI) scores of the observation group were significantly lower than those of the control group after treatment (P<0.05). The height of the anterior margin of the vertebral body and the height of the midline of the vertebral body of the observation group were significantly higher than those of the control group after treatment (P<0.05), and the Cobb angle of the posterior convexity was significantly lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion "Eggshell" technology optimized PKP combined with hyperextension reduction can alleviate pain, improve dysfunction, and restore vertebral height in patients with OVCF.
