Clinical effect of acupoint application combined with acupressure acupuncture on patients with acute phase of knee osteoarthritis

Abstract:
Objective To observe the effect of acupoint application and acupressure acupuncture on acute knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods A total of 90 patients with acute KOA in our hospital from January 2022 to January 2024 were divided into two groups with 45 cases in each group by random number table method. The control group was treated with conventional Western medicine, while the observation group was treated with acupoint application combined with acupoint acupuncture. The efficacy, TCM syndrome score, knee joint function and status, bone metabolism related indexes, CXC chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results The therapeutic efficacy demonstrated in the observation group surpassed that of the control group, exhibiting a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The scores of joint flexion and extension disability, pain and heaviness in the observation group after treatment were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the serum osteocalcin (BGP) and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) of observation group were higher than those of control group, and the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isomer (TRACP-5b) of observation group were lower than those of control group (P<0.05). After undergoing the treatment, the levels of CXCL10 and IL-1β in the observation group exhibited an elevation compared to the control group, with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). However, no noteworthy discrepancy was observed in the frequency of adverse reactions between the two groups, indicating a comparable safety profile (P>0.05). Conclusion Acupoint application combined with acupressure acupuncture in KOA patients can improve the therapeutic effect, reduce clinical symptoms, improve bone metabolism level, reduce inflammation level, and less adverse reactions.
