Effect of acupuncture combined with core muscle training on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and its impact on serum

Abstract:
Objective To explore the therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with core muscle training on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and its impact on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Methods This study was designed as a prospective, single-blind cohort study. A total of 96 patients with mild to moderate AIS who received treatment in the hospital from January 2022 to July 2024 were selected. The patients were divided into two groups using a random number sequence, with 48 cases in each group. The control group was treated with core muscle training, while the observation group was treated with core muscle training combined with traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture therapy. After 3 months of treatment, the Cobb angle, trunk rotation angle (ATR), paraspinal muscle symmetry index (PMSI), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and the levels of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) were compared between the two groups. Complications during treatment were recorded. Results After treatment, the Cobb angle, ATR, and PMSI of both groups decreased (P <0.05), with more significant changes in the observation group (P <0.05). The ODI score decreased, and the BBS score increased in both groups, with more significant improvements in the observation group (P <0.05). Serum BDNF, IGF-1, and CGRP levels increased in both groups, with more pronounced increases in the observation group (P <0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of complications between the two groups (P >0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture combined with core muscle training in the treatment of AIS is beneficial in reducing the Cobb angle and improving trunk balance, and is correlated with the increase in the levels of serum BDNF and other neurotrophic factors.
